Read a chat¶
This page tells you where a chat opens, how to follow the agent's plan at the top of the chat, and how to see the agent's thoughts. The Mac, iPhone, iPad and the web page work the same way.
Where a chat opens¶
A chat always opens at its latest message. The app keeps the chat hidden until it is in place, so the first thing you see is the end, with no scroll. The end is what the agent did last, so it is the part you usually came to read.
- Go back to the end. When you scroll up, a down arrow shows at the foot of the chat. Click or tap it to go to the end.
- On the Mac, choose View ▸ Jump to Latest (Command-Down Arrow).
- On the web page, press Command-Down Arrow or End while the prompt does not have the keyboard.
- Click or tap the session again in the sidebar, when it is already open. The chat goes to its end.
A question or a permission card shows where the agent asked it, not after the whole chat. When the agent asked before its last message, scroll up to find the card. The session's row in the sidebar is under Needs You until you answer. See Answer a question or a permission request.
Follow the plan¶
When the agent makes a plan, a card shows at the top of the chat. It stays there while you scroll, so you can see how far the agent is without reading the whole chat.
The card shows:
- the step the agent works on now, or Plan between steps;
- how many steps are done, such as 2 of 5 (2/5 on a narrow iPhone or iPad screen);
- a thin bar that fills as steps are done.
Click or tap the card to see every step. Click or tap it again to fold it. The step in progress is in bold.
The card shows only the plan in force. When the agent drops a plan, the card goes. The dropped plan stays in the chat where the agent dropped it, struck through, with The agent dropped this plan.
Show the agent's thoughts¶
Most runtimes send the agent's thinking as well as its replies. The chat does not show these thoughts at first, because most people want to read what the agent did, not how it got there.
To see them, choose Show Thoughts. Choose Hide Thoughts to leave them out again.
- On the Mac: choose View ▸ Show Thoughts.
- On iPhone or iPad: in a chat, tap ··· at the top, then Show Thoughts.
- On the web page: in a chat, click ··· at the top, then Show Thoughts.
With the thoughts shown, each thought is one line that starts Thought:, with its first words. Click or tap the line to read the whole thought. With them hidden, the chat, the turns you open and the steps of a subagent show no thoughts.
Each device keeps its own choice. Turning it on in one browser does not turn it on for the Mac or your iPhone.
